Yahoo! is number one in Alexa traffic rankings. That means it is most visited website on the internet. About 27 percent of total internet users visit Yahoo everyday. Google’s share of visitors is 25% and it ranks second in Alexa ranking at the moment.
In contrast to Google where 63% of users visit for search, only 12% of Yahoo users visit the search site. If we recalculate 15% of total internet users would use Google for search and only about 3% would visit Yahoo. No doubt Google is a leader in search engine business.
But still that is a a lot of traffic and if you can divert some to your site it would be good for your business. Yahoo is actually a human-powered directory that offers its results to visitors. The directory is supplemented by a web page index created by crawling. The directory is an important channel in the area of search engine marketing. It is popular and is used extensively by people to locate sources of information.
Getting listed in the directory is a valuable boost to your website for crawling and ranking in other search engines, as the directory provides a high-quality link to your website.
A visitor can search for a site in Yahoo by search engine interface or browse through the hierarchy of directories and sub-directories.
Therefore actual number of visitors who search for Yahoo directory would be higher than 3%.
Yahoo will not list your website just like that. When you submit your website to Yahoo it would charge a fee just for looking at your directory and last time when I checked the fee was $299 for non-adult sites and $600 for adult content sites.? But that does not guarantee an inclusion in directory, only a review.
If you have money it is worth a trial.
Choice of category in directory is an important step because your site can be listed in just one category. You should choose the top category that your target visitor may select. if you cannot decide on category on your own, you can select your target keywords. Search for these keywords and find out which category caters best to them.
Yahoo also displays sites in “most popular sites” when you perform a search. If your site is counted as popular, your site would be displayed in two sections, in most popular sites and alphabetical order for that category. It is not known how does Yahoo put a particular site in popular category but link analysis and click-throughs are likely to be factors.
