Small Business May Loose Customers To Big Brands

In a recent survey it was found that 81% of internet users do not trust small business on the internet. In a recent survey by the payment processor company Paypoint It was found that  among 1000 consumers, just 3 percent of online shoppers are likely to trust a small online business with their money, preferring to shop with larger online brands. A further 81 percent say they have doubt about the security credentials of small, unknown companies.

Not only this, even search engines have started to favor bigger brands. Eric Schmidt from Google says that the internet is fast becoming a “cesspool” where false information thrives.

He even hinted at brand value-

“Brands are the solution, not the problem. Brands are how you sort out the cesspool.”

Is this a danger bell for small businesses. may be but I would call it a caution bell.

With the kind of attitudes search engines and people have together, it is difficult for a small business to thrive and flourish on the net.

He even had a dash of warning in his tone

“We don’t actually want you to be successful,” he said. The company’s algorithms are trying to find the most relevant search results, after all, not the sites that best game the system. “The fundamental way to increase your rank is to increase your relevance,” he added.

What does this mean to a small business?

This means small business need not to resort to measures of getting their fast by manipulating the system but should focus on increasing their relevance.

Small business should focus on content building.

With pain in my typing finger ( and heart too), I have to agree with what Schmidt said. Internet has actually become cesspool. The garbage dominates the value content and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a suitable answer to your query without reaching.

Search engines and people are turning to big brands leaving small guy disappointed. As I see it, situation would only worsen for small non branded businesses. In coming times one page websites would be looked at suspiciously. They still are but the intensity and frequency is going to increase in future.

How To Fight back and Win?

Yes! you can rise above this situation. For this you needto rise above the cesspool. You need to create value and brand aura around your website. You need not become a very big brand but you need to brand your business. You need to build your reputation and credibility (Eh! Sooner or later everyhthing comes to this :-) ).

Building an authority is possible only by building your brand. Untill small business brand themselves, they stand chance of loosing the game.
