Adsense is a great way to monetize your website. There is a learning curve definitely and you would have to study what works best on your website but here are few tips that have worked very well on this site and I believe that they would work on other sites too.
You might know few of them already and might look like repetition to you but then there would be people who would like to know them all.
Test Different Ad Formats
Traditionally rectangle and large rectangle have been said to be highest performers but I have found banner to be equally good and effective. You would need to test your site for the particular ad group.
Color Match
An ad that would match with background of your website would do better than that stands out. Do not put border around your ads. Your ads must look as a part of your website. This will result to more clicks from people visiting your site.
Keep Ads Above The Fold
Both sidebars and area below header are good places to put your ad. These are generally hot areas of your websites and get more clicks.
Do Not Underestimate Link Units
Apart from 3 ad units you can also place three link units and they could be revenue generators if you put them strategically. I have found that an ad link works very well at the end when an article is finishing.
Watch For MFAs
Made for adsense sites drain your income out. Go to blacklist.com and see list of possible made for Adsense and delete them by using Competitive Ad Filter. You can read more about this here.
