When Should You Register Domain Name For Your Web Business

“I think I am ready to begin my online venture. I have vaguely decided what I want to pursue. I am yet to finalize the plan for my business. But I am little confused over the domain name issue. Should I first prepare the details and then register a domain name or register a domain name now and then work on everything.

It is a question that I have come across many times.

The instinctive response is grab a domain name when it comes to your mind. The rest can wait.

My first domain was registered two days before I launched my website. But there have been instances where I have kept domain lying  vacant for more than a year.

If it is your first domain, you need to weigh your options.

Registering a domain name early  has few advantages.

An early registration gives you a higher chance of getting the desired domain name. You are more likely to get a domain today  than tomorrow. This is because somebody else might be interested in the domain as well. Therefore if you have thought of a domain and it is available, go for it.

Registering of a domain is the first concrete step that you take towards building your business. It is easy and does not involve much work except for brainstorming for domain name selection. Registering accomplishes one of the major tasks and now you can focus on the business planning only.

I am in strong favor of registering early.

The only disadvantage that I see with early registration is that it increases idle period of domain. The domain may lie like that for some time before you can work on it. But considering the long term benefits, this is a very small price.

Another possibility is that you might want another name of website after you are finished with detailed planning. If you think that this might happen, it is prudent to wait for finalization.

Most of the domains are around $10, some cost even lesser. Under normal circumstances $10 should not be much of investment but if your conditions are different you might want to hold to reduce idle time.

My personal choice is to register a domain name whenever an idea comes into mind. Sometimes that idea is not utilized immediately and the domain name keeps lying like that. I do not mind that. I just want to get done with the first step.
