About 15 years back when I had just entered the medical school for my graduation, I met this guy named Kabir who was three years senior to me.
It was a process of formal introduction. The way it was done amounted to ragging but it was kind of fun after you get used to and get over the initial tide of fear.
Just to scare the bunch of new entrants, he said, “You have chosen a field that you would regret whole life. It is a field where you need to run to stay at the place where you stand.”
In India, those were the days when people use to choose either Medicine or Engineering. Other careers were either not born yet or did not hold a good social standing.
Why then he would say this?
I asked him this few days later when he had opened a bit and we could talk in a relaxed manner.
“Why do you say that?”
“What I said is absolutely true. But this is true for every career you choose, not only medicine. ” he replied.
“You would understand it yourself”.
It took few years to understand what he had said.
Success somehow means getting ahead of others. If you are doing what everybody else is doing, you are not distinct. you are an average guy who is making his living.
Most of the people are making a living. They are not successful. They are just passing along.
You need to get ahead of them to succeed. Some people might hate this idea but it is a hard hitting truth.
You must run faster than others to stay ahead.
You must make more money, you must have a better rank, you must possess a better authority. It starts in the school itself. You must outperform others to gain attention.
Because there are many people who are better than the average, you get a new kind of competition. The competing group is smaller but competition is fiercer.
Now you have to take care of two things.
- You must run lest you slip and fall into the average group that you have already left behind.
- You must run so that you stay within the successful group and get ahead of them.
Your speed is determined by your competition. Higher you move, faster you need to run to maintain your position.
Doctors need to perform daily. They have to prove themselves daily and stay update with new inventions and techniques.
That is why they move from general practitioner, specialist, super-specialist and so on.
It needs a lot of running.
It does not matter where you are. If you are successful, you must always be in your running shoes.
Your business must perform better than what it is doing now if you wish to move ahead. You must bring new products, bring in new customers and bring more annual yields and outgrow your immediate competitor if you want to move up.
If not then you might be trampled over.
Whole world is running. If you want to stay where you are, you better be running.If you want to move ahead, you need to run faster.
If you are not you would be left behind and washed away.
