It was Dussehra time in my childhood days and I think I was in 7th standard. few of my friends decided to earn some quick money during Dusshehra festival by selling some stuff. It is quite a small village and children working fo rthemselves is not considered a good thing .
Niether by society or by parents.
Looking back I think that children should be encouraged in participating the activities that involve money transaction so that they can understand the game from their early days. the face of society might have begun to change now but at large we still tend the children separating them from these matters and concentrating solely on school matters.
As a result children start dealing with money late and they find difficult to master these matters.
But that is a separate issue.
I pleaded with my parents to let me invest rs 50 to buy toys which I intended to sell with my friends.
No! The reaction was expected. Our child would sell toys? !!
I was given Rs 2 to do what ever I wanted with them. I could either feast with them or buy something for the use/play.
I definitely could not buy the toys for selling with that much amount. But the idea of earning money did not go away.
So I bought a peel away lottery stamps. It is a kind of lottery stamps which had been fixed to the paper chart. One charthad about hundred or so. People would pay 10 paisa per peel. highest prize was Rs 2 and lowest 5 paisa. Many of them also had no value. Whole of the stamps had Rs 4 hidden in them.
I made about 20 sales in 2 days and I had to payback about Rs 1.90.
Not much profit!
I remember to going to man from whom I bought this and complained I made no money.
He laughed and said, ” Sell more.”
But I had already lost my enthusiasm. I did not pursue.
Let us bring this example the web business. If we are not making sales on regular basis we might feel that the business is not worth doing.
The answer is simple – generate more sales.
Untill you sell at a bigger level, you cannot have bigger profits. It requires courage and investment to go at bigger level.
That guy I talked to was known for this business in the town. He sold all kind of lottery stuff and was known for his payments.
He could do that because he was operating at a bigger level and knew the game better than me.
When people went to him they had choice of small priced to high priced stamps. I had only one.
So if your business is not good, focus on sales.
Focus on sales mechanisms.
Enhance your marketing.
Get known in the field.
Build a reputation and live it.
It involves hard work but it also catapults your business.
