How To Use An Adtracker to Track Your Ad Campaign

After your campaign is ready, you need to see how much it is working. Whether it successful in bringing visitors or not. Does it generate revenue or not. If it brings visitors what is there demographic profile.

These are important questions that need to answered .

You need to use an ad tracker.

How to use an ad tracker?

There are two parts of using an ad tracker.

1. Setting up a campaign
2. Analysing the campaign stats

Setting Up A Campaign

Suppose you want to run an ad campaign in your ezine want to run an ad campaign about SEO Training Ebook at 50% discount. In routine you would put it like

Get SEO Training Ebook at 50% discount

http://www.yoursite.com/ seobook

Without an ad tracker you would not be able to tell how did visitor arrive on your site. You would not be able to differentiate between the visitors coming from your ad and other visitors.

Thus without an ad tracker, you will not be able to gauze the effectiveness of your campaign.

But things become different with ad tracker.

With ad tracker all you need to do is create a specific code for the campaign first. This could be anything you would like to make. But it is better to create it from first letters of your campaign word. That way correlation is quick.

If you want to send it on regular basis, you can also put the period code alongwith.For example you want to send the campaign on SEO book every month. You can create short code like seotb1 for January issue, seotb2 for February and so on.
Let us come back to setting up URLs

In your ad tracking program, you would need to give two informations

  1. Target URL- i.e. http://www.yoursite.com/ seobook
  2. Your campaign code.

When you submit this inforation, the software would create a new URL for you. This would be the tracking URL that you would place in your ad campaign instead of your previous URL.

Different ad tracking programs create different formats of URL but typically it would be something similar to

http://www.yoursite.com/a.cgi?a123&seotb1 if your program is on your site or

http://www.trackingservice.com/ a.cgi/?a123&seotb1 if you are using some kind of web based service.

From now on when someone reads that ad and clicks on the new URL they will be taken to http://www.yoursite.com and the ad tracking system will register that the click came from the campaign seotb1.

Campaign Stats

Now it is time to view and analyse stats recorded by your campaign. The ad tracking software/service would record the date and time when the URL was clicked. It would detect and record where your visitor came from, the browser and operating system.

This data is kept in the system so you can generate reports on any ad campaign over any
period e.g. by month, day or even by hour.

Analysing the data would provide you information about efficacy of your ad and the areas you need to improve. It would also allow you to compare the results of two different campaigns.
