Earlier newsletters were text based only because earlier browsers and emails programs did not support HTML.

Even today a lot of marketers keep text based newsletter because in spite of increased use of compatible programs, may still use the ones that do not support HTML.

By internet standards, HTML had been ere for decides and almost all major email programs are compatible for it and display the messages quite accurately.

But the problem may arise when email filters would your links & images if you are not on their whitelist.

If you want to monetize your newsletter by pulling your customers to your website or send them to affiliate products, then text newsletter is good enough.

But if you wish to include multiple advertisement in newsletter for monetization you must keep HTML.

Do Not Center Your Text:
This would make your newsletter look difference on different email programs keep it left sides text only.

Keep Column Length Short:
5 years back it was 70 characters long, 3 years back it was 60. now I have seen people sending their newsletter — with column length of 50 characters.

50 – 60 characters per line is most optimum. The length is kept short because most of people scan webpages and a short column length makes it easier.

Chunk Your Text:
Use a lot of white space. You must split your text in small paragraphs and lines.Use points and list wherever you can a good whitespace. All these measures help in better delivery of information.

Avoid Types:
Spell check before you send your issue. Wrong spellings and typos are disliked by everybody. A good use of language is first prerequisite of any good writing. Your newsletter is no exception.
