This morning my WordPress Admin area greeted with the title sentence. It is quite a major release and was long awaited. There are a lot of good changes in this release which leave me quite excited and I anticipate more for the future.

The official name for this version is  “Reinhardt”, named in honor of the jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt.

Here is list of  major features

Internal Linking -

For a long time I had been looking for a plugin that does this job. In this release of Worpress all you need to do is click a button for an internal link and it allows you to search for a post or browse a list of existing content and select it for inclusion.

Though it is still very basic, this is my favorite feature in this release as it would save me tons of hours sieving through content pages for a link inclusion.

Note: Do not lok for a button in the editor. You get this option when you click hyperlink button after selecting text.

Admin Bar

It contains various links to useful admin screens

Less Screen Clutter

Streamlined writing interface  makes more of the options are hidden by default to give you less cluttered screen for better writing. You can click on Screen Options in the top right to bring them back.

Post Formats

These allow meta information that can be used by themes to customize presentation of a post.

Network Admin

This is new. You can move Super Admin menus and related pages out of the regular admin and into a new Network Admin screen.

Other changes are list-type admin screens, exporter/importer overhaul,  custom content type Improvements, advanced queries and refreshed admin color scheme.

I have upgraded it on my test site. I would complete the upgrade of other sites as I get comfortable and find no issues with the upgrade

Put Links In Captions. This is An Example From My Other Website

By default, any formatting you do in captions of your WordPress blog, it is stripped and only plain text remains.

May be it would improve in future versions of WordPress .

Recently, I was looking for a way to place HTML links in the image and I found this plugin  by Katz Web Services, Inc. that adds links to image captions in the WordPress editor.

Links In Captions

You can install the plugin by going to your plugins page in your WordPress admin area and click “Add New”.

In the search box, type  Links In Captions. Press install after you locate it in search results and activate it when installation completes.

How to use

Inside the caption input, you can now add a link by using the following format:

{link url=”http://www.example.com”}Anchor text here{/link}

Optional: You can also specify target, title, and rel attributes:

{link url=”http://www.example.com” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow” title=”I never could do this before!”}Anchor text here{/link}

Note: The link does not appear in the admin area, only code is seen and caption may seem messy. But on preview it would appear as link.

Possible Uses

• For providing credits to image source
• Mention similar sources
• Promoting affiliate links

Do You Hyperlink Your Image Caption?

Howdo you approach this problem. Do you use some plugin or put some kind of code there.

Siobhan on WPMU.org has written a very nice article on why you should not search for free themes on Google. The author presents a well researched case with nice illustrations and experiment.

The basic worry is the malicious code that people enter in the free WordPress themes. According to author 8 out of 10 sites in Google search first page were found to have themes which were having malicious code and these sites are recommended to be avoided.

I think there is a term for it too. It is called theme malware. It has sparked a a discussion as well and Mark Ghosh at Weblog Tools Collections has suggested two possible solutions to this.

MEanwhile there are few plugins that you can use to scan the theme you think need to be checked.

There is a nice plugin for WordPress which makes creating pull quotes a very simple task. It is called Simple Pull Quotes.

For installing it

1.In  Admin area of WordPress, under ‘plugin’ tab, click “Add New”

2. In the search box, write “Simple Pull Quotes”

3. You would come across something like this

4. Install and activate.

Using Plugin

Open your visual editor and write your post as usual. Select the text you want to come as pull quote and look for button as shown below. Press the button and the selected text would automatically be displayed as pull quote.

It is the best WordPress description that I have come across. Joost De Valk has written a very nice and clear infographics and explains the stuff in words you would understand.

Anatomy of WordPress Theme

In a hurry to make our first post, we often neglect the Time zone setting in WordPress. This does not affect the immediate publishing but might cause confusion when you are time stamping your posts for publishing in future.

By default the WordPress shows UTC time and you need to customize that for your time zone.

Here is how to do that

1. Log in your WordPress admin account

2. In left hand menu bar, scroll down to “Settings”

3.In Settings menu, click “General”

4.In the screen that appears, scroll to Timezone

5.Choose city that is most relevant to time zone.

6. Save.

Feedburner Feedsmith is a wonderful plugin for managing your WordPress feed (self-hosted WordPress). The plugin detects any access your feed (e.g. http://www.yoursite.com/feed/ or http://www.yoursite.com/wp-rss2.php, etc.), and redirect them to your FeedBurner feed so you can track every possible subscriber. It will forward for your main posts feed and optionally, your main comments feed as well.

I had been using this plugin in all my sites and wanted to add a newly revamped site.

As usual, I went to Plugin page in the admin area and searched for the plugin. [After autoinstall feature has come to WordPress, I have rarely looked for the plugins outside. Everything seems to be available for autoinstall.

I was surprised to find that Feedsmith was not there.

I looked at the Feedburner interface but there was no mention. I remember it was there earlier before Google took over Feedburner.

Finally I searched at Google.

And I found the mention and download link at this page

Installation

Installation instructions at Google page are old. It does work that way but with upload feature available directly inside your WordPress area, you really do not need to go through that hassel.

All you need to do is

1. Download the plugin [It is a direct link to the download]
2. Upload the plugin from Your WordPress admin interface at plugins page and install
3. Activate the plugin and you are ready to go

, then follow the instructions below to begin forwarding all WordPress feed traffic to your FeedBurner feed.
