There is something that might be eating your productive time while you are unaware of the issue. Most of us are in the habit of learning new things and that is a good thing. The problem lies in inaction.

Let me explain. You buy an ebook on how to create videos. You read the theory and make the concepts. It seems very easy.

You read the entire ebook but do not create any video. You postpone that for some other day because right now you are pressed for today’s work issues.

Tomorrow turns into another day and you never do it. By the time you decide to do it, you have forgotten the things you learned and concepts you created.

You learn again.

Learning and not taking action makes any study material like a story book. It fascinates the mind and that is all it does.

So?

Learn and do at the same time.

Do not move to the next chapter until you do the actual work of the previous.

This would serve two purposes -

-You actually learn the thing.

-You retain it longer.

And this goes for everything, every process you want to learn, be it minor or major.

Due to certain pressing reasons, I am putting Basic Lessons series [which is published every Wednesday and Thursday] on hold. I am sorry to cause the inconvenience but things are quite pressing at this moment.

I am working on few offline projects and that are taking substantial part of my time and energy.

Things should be better in few weeks.

But that does not mean I would not be posting on this blog. The posts would be published regularly. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, other posts would take place of Basic Lessons series till it resumes back.

In todays’s basic learning series, I am back with more stuff for today’s lesson. Today we are going to discuss different types of hyperlinks that your website can have.

The Extra Time Is Always Worth The Result

Today I am taking an off to technical stuff presented in the Basic Lesson Series. Instead we discuss how spending few extra minutes on a thing could increase your productivity.

When we get into our online business we are so eager to do everything fast and in least possible time. We haste and we hurry. But instead if we devote right amount of time to a project and in fact if we consider spending few moments extra, the results would e substantially different.

It is better to do lesser things with right aount of focus than doing a lot of things without paying much attention.

It is matter of temptation and habit. With enough restraint and practice, I assure you that you can learn to focus better.

Suppose you are writing an article. Spend some more time on idea and writin the article. Take out few minutes and check the language. See the opportunities of improvement.

From years of writing I know the difference between hasted writing and focused , deliberate writing.

Same thing applies to everything that you.

Whether it is email that you need to send or a comment you are making at fellow blog.

Just think how you could improve it.

Website navigation has a similar function to do. It helps people reach various parts and pages of your website.

The better your navigation is, easier it is for people to access the content or the product in your website.

Bad navigation leads to a frustrated visitor which results in lost reader or sale as the case may be.

A navigation system must enable the user to find out

* Where they are now in your website
* What should they do to reach some other page

If your website is only a few pages, you can simply post the links to those pages and that would be enough. But if you host a lot of content, not only it should be organized but also easily reachable.

Objectives of a navigation system is to provide the user with indicators of location and control over the browsing.

A user can enter any page of your site from outside.  Wherever they might land in, they must be able to orient themselves quickly.

Use of Breadcrumbs

User orientation this can be easily done with use of breadcrumbs.

Breadcrumbs are series of hierarchical links that you have used to go from page to page within a section. For example if you are in article section of a website and category “wealth management”, the breadcrumbs might appear like

Home>Articles>Online Business.

Breadcrumbs is like a trail of the path you have followed. Each element in the breadcrumb is a link to that section or subsection.

Use of breadcrumbs allows the user to directly go back to the main section page or another sub section without following the same trail. breadcrumbs also show the context of the page being viewed and its relation to a section or sub-section.

They serve both as locator and navigational control.

If you  want people to move around your website, have a good navigation.

I should have made this post in the beginning of  this series but somehow it slipped. Before one makes money from his business, he needs to learn about business.

Learning starts the day you have a desire and you act upon the desire to build your business.  Before you become an expert, you need to be a student.

Any skill you learn pass through following stages

• Awareness/Interest
• Information
• Practice & Application
• Mastery

These might be vaguely overlapping but would help you to grow your concepts.

Awareness/Interest

Awareness can be compared to desire to do the thing. When that thing happens you start following the intended thing more closely. You become aware of existence of the thing. For example you are aware of internet and website stuff but when you think about having your own website, you start noticing what a website is in actuality. You become aware of the things that make website like hosting and domain name. You start noticing more people around who possess a website. To say it you become interested in a skill.

Information

Gathering the information is next step. You start looking for places where you can find the information and how you are going to learn about that information. It might be internet, it might be someone you know or your local library or coaching classes. You look for more and more information until in theory you have a strong foundation.

Practice & Application

After you have the information, next thing is doing practice. Practice puts your theory to test. When you cannot execute at one point you go back and learn the concept again. For example when you have an idea about HTML, you can start building a page. But initially it would be fraught with hiccups because your execution cannot be smooth yet.

Slowly you become better and ready for application of the skill in the end.

Mastery

Repeated applications and experience would lead to mastering the skill. Fro example you might apply your knowledge of website creation for creating the business websites over a period of time and your experience might lead to improvement of the designing process itself by adding better graphics and templates.

What we discussed was acquisition of the skill. Apart from acquisition of the requisite skills [which might vary depending upon the area involved], you also need to gain knowledge.

That demands more reading on continuous basis and staying current on the matter.

When you have knowledge, it is easier to work upon the things.

Knowledge is an ever learning process. One must become student of business if one desires to succeed in online business.

If you want to look professional in online business world, your website should look professional and appealing. It might look a very complex task in the beginning but as you gather the basics, you would find that the task is much easier than you think.

It is important that your web site looks professional and well done.

Sidenote: With WordPress and professional themes around the websites can be built in a flash. But a basic idea how a website should look would help you to select good themes for your site too.

Do on thing find some websites in your niche and browse them. See what you like and what makes you run away.

Take a special note of the professional websites (those with a big name and following) are doing.

Here are few other important points that you must take into account while planning your website design.

• Keep page size as small as possible. This can be achieved by using smaller and minimum graphic files i.e. using a small logo, and images only if absolutely necessary.

• Maintain Consistency throughout the site. Keep the same font throughout. Your website should bear same or similar look throughout the page and every page. Different colored background for every page is kind of unprofessional.
• Be Generous With White Space. Do not clutter or congest your page.
• Format your page well. Leave a reasonable amount of margins on each side and center your text. Use line breaks and paragraphs! People scan the web pages rather than reading, therefore splitting your text into paragraphs would let your visitor to absorb more with less effort!
• Don’t use cute fonts, background and graphics.
• Do not use fancy animations or effects. Your page should look sincere, straightforward and easy to navigate.

Before you publish your page, you should see how does your page actually look in the the web browser. You should at least see your page in internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and Mozilla Firefox.
