SEO-Pros and Cons of Optimizing Your Site For of Organic Search
October 28, 2007 by Arun Pal Singh
In contrast to [tag-tec]pay per click advertising[/tag-tec], SEO is toally a different ball game. Rather than working on your advertisement and paying for traffic, you work on your website so that your web site gets a top ranking in search engine searches
for the relevant keywords.
While PPC is quick and expensive, SEO is slow with expenses varying from free to substantial amount depending on how you do it.
SEO is an intimidating topic for many webmasters. It is a subject that involves a lot of technical knowledge and approach is multifactorial. Added to that is the hype created by so called SEO experts who would go to any length to prove that you do not and will not have any clue about search engine optimization.
However, search engine optimization is a subject that every webmaster should learn. And there is nothing that cannot be learned. You need not be a geek to learn and understand SEO.
Before you move further in [tag-tec]SEO[/tag-tec], it is important to know how it works. It is important to understand the advantages and limitation of the method. Then it is up to you to decide per your situation whether to use PPC alone, SEO alone or both combined.
[tag-tec]Organic traffic[/tag-tec] can mean a huge traffic and big revenue. If you could gear your site up for organic search traffic, you site traffic would jump the moment search engine lists you in top.
There are limitations attached though that your should be aware of and place measures in place to counter them. let us discuss one by one.
Advantages
Visitors Are Free: When visitors find your site in search engine by search and click your link to visit your website, you do not spend a dime. Every visitor is free of cost.
Huge Traffic: Your PPC traffic is limited by your budget. Moreover, a greater number of searchers click in the organic search results than the PPC ads. That means more traffic in orgnic search than PPC.
Higher Credibility: Most searchers trust search engines for their searches. So if your site is listed high in the search, searchers place a higher amount of trust in your site. Therefore it is easier to convert those visitors into customers.
Higher Return On Investment: Your budget and competition in your niche would determine what your initial investment would be. You can learn to do it or outsource. Whatever method you resort to the returns in the long run would be quite satisfying, because the amount of traffic that would come to your site would be huge.
Disadvantages
It Is Slow: Effects of search engine optimization may take few weeks or months. You may need to regularly monitor and adjust.
Requires Website Development Regularly: For SEO you need to work upon your website regularly on many aspects of your website. That includes addition of new content, updating navigation and linking or getting more inbound links. This is in contrast to PPC where you simply drive visitors to a specific page and try to convert them. However, for SEO and organic search, you need to develop your website as good center of information and make it usable.
Is Algorithm Dependent: Search engines keep changing algorithms and that may effect your rank in their listings. You would need to adjust to changed algorithm. That may result in site dropping down and then climbing up again may require time.
Organic traffic is good but slow. There is learning too. If your budget allows, you may plan to put PPC in place for immediate traffic and then work on SEO and other modes of traffic for traffic in long run to maximize the benefits.
